What it would cost Rutgers to fire Greg Schiano, and why no buyout figure has been made public yet. That would be a one-time cost, not yearly pay.
Mid-season 2026 cell is pending: published figures are rounded and disagree (NJ.com roughly $18 million, Oct. 4, 2026; ESPN $18.6 million, Oct. 8, 2026; FOX Sports (citing USA TODAY) roughly $18.5 million after the season), so no firm dollar is booked. The next step, $17,296,875 as of Jan. 1, 2027, is 76.875% of the remaining 2027–2029 base ($22.5 million) and is the unrounded post-season figure printed by CBS Sports (Sept. 11, 2026). Prior USA TODAY database cell $23,735,156 as of Oct. 8, 2025 is retired. Staff buyout is not booked: the same article estimates at least $8,580,000 over two years for about 80 people (imprecise; missing latest assistant contracts and reasonable-effort offsets) and a combined head-coach-plus-staff total of roughly $28 million, later restated as staff roughly $9 million. Chris Ash’s $8.47 million is the prior paid buyout named in that article, not this overhang. Liability/overhang, not annual spend.
